The novel, which Mark Twain wrote in 1896 at the age of 61—his last completed work—is dedicated to the life of Joan of Arc. Interestingly, the author presents it as the memoirs of Louis de Contes, a page and secretary to the Maid of Orleans, translated by Jean-François Alden, while he assigns himself the role of editor.
„Joan of Arc“ stands out among Twain’s novels for its emotional sincerity and artistic integrity. The author himself held this work in high regard, noting: „Perhaps the book won’t sell, but that doesn’t matter: I wrote it for the soul.“ According to the memoirs of Susie Clemens, Twain’s daughter, her father wept while reading the manuscript to his family. And at the end of his life, he declared: „Of all my books, my favorite is the one about Joan of Arc; it is the best, I am sure. Writing it gave me seven times more pleasure than writing all the others. I spent twelve years on research, and writing it took me another two.“
