About the Product

Description

The New York Architect“ is a bittersweet tale of the strength, dreams, ambitions and incredible hard work of a fragile woman who has lived in difficult times.

The year is 1865. Emily Warren marries Washington Roebling, the son of one of the United States' greatest civil engineers. Father and son built bridge after bridge together and left their name in history. But they won't find satisfaction until they fulfill their big dream - a bridge that connects the city of Brooklyn to the opposite island of Manhattan. And the need is great, both Manhattan and Brooklyn are growing by the hour, the ferry connecting them does not travel in bad weather, gets stuck in the ice in winter...

And so it was that in 1867 the building permit was granted and a monstrous design for its time, a suspension bridge, a new wonder of the world, was born on the drawing table. The design was unique, the technology too. But as in bad fairy tales, the miracle bridge takes its toll - Roebling Sr. suffers a fatal accident, and his son, the chief engineer of the structure, falls seriously ill as a result of working underwater. It is the frail Emily who takes on the task of completing the epochal project - despite the public's disbelief that a woman can practice a man's profession, despite the furious opposition of the New York City government. After 13 years of hard work, Emily gave the great city one of its emblems to this day - the Brooklyn Bridge.
